The aim of this article is to highlight the non-standard phenomena that govern inner speech. This linguistic object, which can’t be directly observed, challenges the norms and methods of its study. We need to develop specific methods for the analysis of inner speech that differs from the one we use for oral and/or written communicative discourse. The inner speech constitutes the other, hidden side of the externalized speech, written and/or oral speech, and the variety of its representations shows the impossibility of its formalization. Therefore, the representation of inner speech that Hermann Broch elaborates in Der Tod des Vergil questions the textual and morphosyntactic norms and conventions. Neither the paragraph nor the sentence seem to be a relevant linguistic unit for the analysis of inner speech. Instead, the focus lies on rhythm and acoustic phenomena, which are two essential features of inner speech
