Summary: The present study aims to determine the role of tattoos in the affirmation of criminal identity among "microbes" in Abidjan. It is based on the general hypothesis that tattooing contributes to the affirmation of criminal identity among the "microbes" in Abidjan. The methodological approach used is qualitative and the data was collected by means of a non-directive interview. It was addressed to a sample of 30 "microbes", all male, aged between 10 and 25 years, received over a period of six months (from 1 July to 28 December 2019), at the Addictology and Mental Hygiene Department of the National Institute of Public Health (INSP) in Abidjan (Côte d'Ivoire). The results obtained, interpreted in the light of Anzieu's (1985) theory of the ego-skin, indicate that tattoos were used as signs of belonging to the antisocial group by 43% of the "microbes", allowing 13% to gain respect and 43% to be feared by their peers and the general population. These results emphasise the importance of paying attention to body language among adolescents and young people who are maladjusted in Abidjan.
