These new arrivals are on the one hand assigned to a so-called &quot;ordinary&quot; class, corresponding to their age, where they are taught physical and sports education, visual arts and music - sometimes mathematics - and, on the other hand, they are grouped together in a &quot;teaching unit for allophone arriving pupils&quot; (UPE2A) in elementary school, coll&egrave;ge and lyc&eacute;e for daily teaching of the French language, then called &quot;French as a second language&quot; or &quot;French as a language of schooling&quot;. These very heterogeneous groups have an average of 15 students. Pupils in coll&egrave;ge from 6e to 3e are, in principle, between 11 and 16 years of age and therefore have different interests. Their language and culture of origin vary, as do their level of previous schooling, their level of literacy and their relationship to learning French and, to a wider extent, their relationship to school. The Institution recommends that the duration of reception in these specific classes should vary according to the needs of each pupil but should not exceed one year. The Ministry&#39;s stated objective is that pupils should be able to follow, as quickly as possible, the full range of teaching in a class of the ordinary curriculum in order to achieve, like native speakers, the knowledge and skills targeted by the Common Base of Knowledge and Skills (2006).
