Abstract

In this paper we will reconsider the notion of verb valency as defined by Lucien Tesniere in the Elements of Structural Syntax and subsequently addressed in many studies. Our aim is to highlight the concepts of valency frame (scheme), as well as the notions of “saturability” and “saturation”. At the same time, we will examine their place within structural syntax and their presence (at least implicitly) in some other theories. On the example of certain repertories of verbal valency (valency dictionary, valency bases) we will try to explain the most important methodological issues for the development of a French-Croatian dictionary of verbal valences. Taking into account Tesniere’s pedagogical approaches oriented towards the teaching of verbal valency and given the existence of valency dictionaries and bases, we will try to formulate certain number of useful orientations when developing valency repertories for didactic purposes.

Key words : verbal valency, valency dictionary, saturability and saturation of verbal valency, valency frame, French, Croatian.
