Abstract

The "dynamics of encampment" (Agier, 2014) are developing in the heart of a "fortress Europe" with increasingly impenetrable borders. This article discusses the situation in Greece and draws a parallel between the multiplication of camps and the schools located within them. Based on a doctoral research in sociology, it presents and contextualizes the phenomena of generation inversion (Moro, 1998) and the parentification of children (Boszormenyi-Nagy, 1965) which develop in migration and lead to a real inversion of parenthood in the camps. Based on a qualitative survey conducted over the period 2017-2019 across seven camps located in mainland Greece and the Aegean islands, this study considers 56 semi-structured interviews conducted with a panel composed of camp users, aid workers, teachers, officials and political figures. The analysis of the corpus makes it possible to explain how, through strategies of attraction and retention of parents carried out by the educational complexes located in the camps, the return of parenthood and the deparentification of children takes place. This process becomes the starting point of a deeper modification of the camp's face, since its users, through the return of the family structure, manage to regain control of their way of life.

Key words

Migrations ; Parenthood ; Refugee camps ; Education ; Greece ; Hotspots
