Abstract

Resistance to language learning is often posited as a natural factor that is part of the language learning process. In Algeria, this resistance is mainly displayed against French rather than another language. It was during a survey by semi-structured interviews carried out with middle school French teachers with the aim of identifying the choice of languages made by French teachers in the teachers' room that the latter reported that a certain number of rejection speeches are often expressed by their colleagues from other disciplines (mainly Arabists) against their choice to speak French in this place. From this analysis, an interesting hypothesis then emerged: If these teachers from other disciplines are so radically opposed to their French colleagues speaking French in the teachers' room, would they not broadcast by the same these speeches against French in their classes intended for their learners when they are giving their lessons? Could this be one of the causes of resistance to learning French at school? Analysis of the testimonies of the teachers surveyed will allow us to identify the degree of opposition to French, showing to what extent these discourses can possibly encourage learners to resist learning this language.

Key words: resistance, negative attitudes, anti-French discourse, rejection of French
